NIMBY Theory

18 01 2013

NIMBY Theory? What is that? NIMBY stands for “Not In My Backyard”. Hmm,, what is that?

Later I know that this is some kind of sarcasm for those people who only talk about good things but refuse to sacrifice their own interest. Should I give an example? Ok,, let see around us, recently there has been a huge disaster in Jakarta, flood is everywhere, even in the national palace. Garbage problem is one of the reason for this to be happened. It is easy to talk that you should put your garbage in the proper place, and not in the river or anywhere, in order to prevent the flood or diseases. In reality, this is not as easy as it heard.

OK, so what is the relationship between garbage and NIMBY? Lets assume that everybody has the same consciousness to put their garbage in the proper place. So what? in the end it should dumped to somewhere else outside their neighborhood. The jargon is not enough, there should be a continuous process for the garbage, not just dump it in the landfills (TPA). Everybody agree with it. I am sure of it. But when it comes to decide where we should build an incinerator and recycling facilities, everybody refuse the idea about building it around their neighborhood. I can only imagine what their thought, and maybe it will be like this : “Ok, I agree that the recycling facilities is good, and it can also prevent the flood disaster, but NOT IN MY BACKYARD! You can build it anywhere, but certainly not in my backyard!”. What will happen if everybody shared the same thought? Not even one final recycling facilities will be built in a place near the city. So, what should we do?

PS : China has the same problem when they want to expand their Maglev Train connection. But when the people in certain city know that the line will use some of their land space in the city, they refused the idea. At least that is what I heard from my lecturer.
